So, this is pretty amazing. Todd Glass - a brilliant, widely-respected journeyman comic - just trampled out of the closet.
This threw me for somewhat of a loop as I’ve been reasonably cut-in on who’s in the comedy closet, and had never even so much as heard his name whispered about… and given…
Happy (belated) New Year, Tumblrers!
Sorry I’ve been such a slacker lately (to the none of you that
noticed). I’ve been busy - both crappy-work-busy and
fun-holiday-busy, just haven’t sat down to post about any of it.
My [unnecessary, self-indulgently purchased] new phone is coming
today, which means I’ll be able to share more stupidity whilst out and
about. Hot damn!

Testy patterns
I have deleted as many emails-in-progress as I have actually sent
messages today. I’m pretty much operating on the premise that any
instinctive response I have to any request will be taken the wrong
way. Everything is urgent, everyone is stressed, I’m just doing my
best to plow through without complicating matters further.
Let’s get it straight; for the most part I am...
My work week still isn't over
…in terms of shit I still have to do before Monday, but at least I’m at home now.
Against all urges to the contrary, I convinced myself to sweat out some rage on the rowing machine, and Nate had a martini waiting for me when I finished!
I may have taken said martini with me into the shower (it wasn’t a stemmed glass, I’m quasi-responsible) and it may have been the best...
Come watch me do some stand-up tonight... →
extrafirmhold:
If you’re in Toronto, come see this: ‘The Girl With the Globe Tattoo’. Hosted by the hilarious Heidi Brander. It’s a fundraiser for Alex Brown, to raise money for homeless youth, but also to give him a trashy tattoo! (v important, if not, more-so)
Alex Brown has declared that if he can raise $3000 for homeless youth, he will get Dean McArthur’s name tattooed on his body (in...
The Girl With the Globe Tattoo is TONIGHT!
Which means I have to suck it up and do stand-up for the first time in
ages. I encourage you to attend, if you’re in Toronto (Smiling Buddha
Bar, College & Dovercourt, 9pm, proceeds to support homeless youth) -
but maybe not specifically to see me.
I’m out of practice because my brain truly hasn’t had room for other
things over the past few weeks, and in all honesty my...
ATTN: Fellow Toronto booze enthusiasts
Any location recommendations for Friday day-drinking? It’s rare for me
to have a Friday vacation day where I stay in town, but I do and I am
because my friend is visiting*, yay!
*this was not intended as a menstruation euphemism, but now that I
think about it, 2 friends are visiting…
Rowing Accountability Post: Week 6
Distance in week 6: 43km
Distance since week 1: 195km
I did what I planned to over the last week, which was especially good given the interruptions the previous weekend and likelihood of further interruptions this weekend.
At the very least, I managed to get through my 5km today, against all odds! By ‘all odds’ I mean ‘toe cramps in both feet’. I’m now eating a...
Today would be my 13th anniversary
…if I was one of those people who somehow parlays their first high
school relationship into something that succeeds through adulthood.
He was a lovely boy, but that was not in the cards for us.
It’s not that I have obsessively retained every detail of my teenage
affairs, but we started dating on the anniversary of the École
Polytechnique massacre, so that serves as my reminder...

Rowing Accountability Post: Week 5
Distance in week 5: 28km
Total since week 1: 152km
My total for the week dropped for the first time since I started. I went out of town on Friday night and didn’t get back til yesterday afternoon, so I missed 2 sessions.
The one upside to the days off was the opportunity to let my hair get a little greasy without it being full-tilt gross. In recent years I’ve avoided washing my hair...
Sophie's Moist
This morning, I couldn’t find my umbrella [in the 20 seconds I spent looking in its normal spot] so I took a cab. It hasn’t stopped raining so far, and I expect it to continue through my journey home. Do I
1) Take another cab
2) Purchase an umbrella somewhere in the safety of the PATH before venturing outside
The umbrella would be re-usable, unlike the money spent on the cab, but...
Rowing Accountability Post: Week 4
Distance in week 4: 39km
Distance since week 1: 124km
The longer I spend on the machine, the more boring it gets. It’s an air-resistance model, so I can’t really use TV or music to keep myself entertained unless I want to totally crank the volume (I don’t). What I’m doing instead is watching DVDs with the subtitles turned on. (That, or watching things I’ve seen so...
The Walk of Fame is currently under some sort of...
I know this because I trudge past it every morning. I’m not sure what
they’re actually doing, but to brighten my own day I’ve been telling
myself that they’re prying out Nickelback’s star and installing one
for Jackie Burroughs.
Rowing Accountability Post: Week 3
Distance in week 3: 37.5K
Total distance since week 1: 85K
I’m now doing a minimum of 5K/day. Trying to increase speed on weekdays and do longer distances on weekends/work from home days (i.e. days when I don’t get a lot of walking in). And yes, I am still relying on frustration with other areas in life (well, just one main area really) to motivate me - it works!
Such Hell Is Tuesday
Every time I step away from my desk, I come back to find a voicemail waiting.
Every time I respond to a voicemail, I get another voicemail while on the phone.
This isn’t even touching on the email requests. Basically I’m pretty
sure I’m going to choke to death speed-eating my salad today.
Stalecation
because even ‘staycation’ isn’t weak enough to describe my plans.
I’m taking a day off tomorrow. I’ll have a ton of work to catch up on Monday, but I realized that I would feel like that on Monday even if I did work on Friday. That’s just how things are going right now. So from that perspective, it really won’t make a noticeable difference on my...
Rowing Accountability Post: Week 2
This is just as much about getting my money’s worth out of the thing as it is about fitness.
Distance covered in week 2: 31K
Distance since beginning: 47.5K
In a sick way, it’s helping that work is face-punchingly frustrating lately (which, incidentally, is why I haven’t been posting much). Instead of screaming in my office, I wait til I get home and sweat out the rage...
Rowing Accountability Post: Week 1
Total Distance: 16.5km. I started small, so it’s not much, but the
machine is working well for me. I’ve been increasing my distance
incrementally and am already on track to smash this number during week
#2!

I do some of my best writing in my head while...
I also do some of my worst. I think I’ve mentioned this before; the more tired/distracted I am, the more one-track and low-brow my ideas.
Here’s today’s creation from my walk home, to the chorus of Eminem’s Without Me (such a timely reference, you’re welcome):
So this feels like I’ve gotta pee
So everybody - I gotta pee
‘Cause I need a little - place...

I went out last night for LADIES night with Laura & Arianne. And let me tell you, it was a wake-up call. Three years (rounding down) of non-stop partying in gay clubs (rounding up; gay clubs = Buddies) has rendered me a veritable tourist in what is supposed to be my natural habitat. I imagine…
I had a great time last night, and somehow successfully demonstrated...
